All My Eggs

Living Simply and Frugally

Thrifted Finds

I love to sew and do crafts.  But it can be expensive to purchase all of those supplies and fabrics.  One of my favorite things to do is to scour the thrift stores for fabric, ribbons, trims and old patterns.

Recently I felt like I hit the jackpot!

Pillow Cases

Pillow Cases

I found these pillow cases, and several sheets that I thought would make great quilt backing.

I may have to force myself to cut up some of these, but I found a wide variety.  I didn’t pay more than $2.00 for the sheets, and $1 for each of the pillow cases.  This gave me many, many yards of fabric!  I also found this 2 yd. piece of denim.  I’m sure that I can use this for a large bag or tote.

And I found this vintage Vogue Christmas pattern:

The wreath in this pattern is one that I had made many, many, many years ago!

And I thought that the advent tree, or the tree patchwork pillow might be something that I might like to do this year once again!

Vogue Christmas

I  only paid about 50¢ for this pattern.

The thriftstores can be a great source for finding sewing supplies. Just think outside the box!

Uses for Decorative Bottles

Decorative BottlesI love to use colorful, decorative bottles.   I like to keep a basket next to my stove using these bottles with olive oil, grapeseed oil, extra virgin olive oil and wine vinegar. Not only does it keep these items that use on a regular basis handy, it helps me to control how much of these liquids I use.  Better for our health, and our pocketbook.

The blue bottle is a wine bottle (I just loved the deep blue color) and the others are ones that I picked up at the thrift store and at kitchen store clearance sales. I rarely pass these decorative bottles up when I see them.

Here I used one for my homemade lemon extract.  They’re great to have on hand to fill with flavored oils, homemade extracts or vinegars and flavored liquors for gifts.

I also use one for my dish detergent.  It looks great setting on my countertop next to the sink, and it also saves on the amount of detergent that I use.

Waffles

WafflesI’ve been making this waffle recipe for years.  It can be varied by adding up to 1/2 wheat flour in place of unbleached white.  You can also add blueberries, raspberries or blackberries easily by folding them into the batter before pouring it onto the waffle grill, or I spoon blueberries onto the batter after I have it poured onto the grill.  Serve with  jam or my homemade maple syrup.

2 c. unbleached all-purpose flout

2 tbsp cornmeal (optional)

1/2 tsp salt

2 tsp baking soda

3 lg. eggs, separated (only save 2 of the egg yolks)

2 1/4c. buttermilk

Spray your waffle iron with non-stick cooking spray, or brush with canola cooking oil.  Heat.

Separate your eggs, add the 3 egg whites to a bowl and beat until stiff. Set 2 of your egg yolks aside.  (I only use 2 to keep down the cholesterol level of the recipe).

Separate your eggs

Separate your eggs

Add all dry ingredients into another bowl.  Mix them together well.  In a large measuring cup, mix together the buttermilk and the egg yolks. Slowly start mixing the liquids into the dry ingredients.  The batter will be thick.

Mix liquids into dry ingredients

Fold in the egg whites.

Next fold the egg whites into the batter.  Don’t beat them in, you want the batter to be light and airy.

Pour batter onto the waffle iron

Pour onto your waffle iron, and cook until brown.

WafflesI preheat my oven and a plate, and place them into the oven to keep warm until the entire batch is done.

This recipe is easy to double to make extras or for a large crowd.  I cool off the extra waffles, separate them and wrap and freeze them.  To eat, I thaw and place in the toaster on a light setting.  Great for a quick weekday breakfast!

Enjoy!
